News & Views: Quantum physics: Single electrons pop out of the Fermi sea

The ability to control individual electrons in an electronic conductor would pave the way for novel quantum technologies. Single electrons emerging from a sea of their fellows in a nanoscale electrode can now be generated. See Letter p.659

Quantum point contacts: “Nature” Sept. 13

Wednesday, September 11th, 2013

We like to point to the article “Microscopic origin of the ‘0.7-anomaly’ in quantum point contacts” in Nature Volume 501
One of the authors, Prof. Werner Wegscheider, Laboratory for Solid State Physics, ETH Zurich, supplied the samples for this study.

When galaxies switch off…

When galaxies switch off: Hubble’s COSMOS survey solves “quenched” galaxy mystery

Some galaxies hit a point in their lives when their star formation is snuffed out, and they become quenched. Quenched galaxies in the distant past appear to be much smaller than the quenched galaxies in the Universe today. This has always puzzled astronomers – how can these galaxies grow if they are no longer forming stars? A team of astronomers led by Marcella Carollo at the ETH Zurich has now …Read more: ETH life and  NASA/ESA press release
