Jan Stenflo, professor emeritus at Institute of Astronomy, ETH Zurich, is the recipient of the G.G. Stokes Award for 2012 that is offered by SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics.

The G. G. Stokes Award is given annually for exceptional contribution to the field of optical polarization. The award may be presented for a specific achievement, development, or invention of significant importance to optical science and society, or may be given for lifetime achievement.

The SPIE award citation for Stenflo is “in recognition of his wide-ranging and fundamental work on both the measurement and theory of polarized radiation, which has revolutionized our understanding of the sun’s magnetic field, the quantity underlying all solar activity”.

Today the German Physical Society (GPS) announced that the two researchers
Dr. Aldo Antognini (ETH Zürich, Institute for Particle Physics, Prof. K. Kirch) and Dr. Randof Pohl (MPQ Garching, Laser Spectroscopy Division, Prof. T. W. Hänsch) will be awarded the Gustav-Hertz-Prize of the GPS. The prize will be given to them on the occasion of the next spring meeting of the Society in March 2012 in Stuttgart. The laureats are honored because of their outstanding contributions in the recent measurement of the Lambshift in muonic hydrogen and the precise determination of the proton’s charge radius. The experiment was performed by an international team at the Paul Scherrer Institut.

Die Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft (DPG) hat heute bekannt gegeben, dass der Gustav-Hertz-Preis der DPG an die beiden Forscher Dr. Aldo Antognini (ETH Zürich, Institut für Teilchenphysik, Prof. K. Kirch) und Dr. Randof Pohl (MPQ Garching, Abteilung Laserspektroskopie, Prof. T. W. Hänsch) verliehen wird. Die Auszeichnung wird anlässlich der Frühjahrstagung der DPG im März 2012 in Stuttgart überreicht. Die Preisträger werden für ihren massgeblichen Beitrag zur Messung der Lambshift in myonischem Wasserstoff und die präzise Bestimmung des Ladungsradius des Protons ausgezeichnet. Das Experiment wurde im Rahmen einer internationalen Kollaboration am Paul Scherrer Institut durchgeführt.
